Florence’s cathedral stands tall over the city with its magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, with the baptistery right across. Florence’s cathedral is the 4th largest in the world, after St. Peter’s in Rome, St. Paul’s in London and the Duomo in Milan.
The cathedral named in honor of Santa Maria del Fiore is a vast Gothic structure built on the site of the 7th century church of Santa Reparata, the remains of which can be seen in the crypt.
The Fabbriceria della Cattedrale di Firenze was founded in 1296 by the Florentine Republic to oversee the construction of the Duomo and is responsible for its conservation.
The complex is divided into the Baptistery of San Giovanni with the Porta del Paradiso, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Crypt of Santa Reparata, the Dome of Brunelleschi, and Giotto’s Bell Tower.
