Firenze Trip Overview
The Uffizi has its roots in 1560, when Cosimo I de ‘Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari, an Italian painter, architect, writer, and historian, a project for the construction of a large building to house the administrative and judicial offices of the Florentine State.
Thanks to Vasari himself, five years after the Uffizi, the extraordinary tunnel today known as Vasari’s Corridor was built, passing over Ponte Vecchio and the Santa Felicita church, connecting the Uffizi to the new Medici residence of Pitti Palace and ending in the Boboli Gardens.
The De’Medici family had always possessed outstanding private Art Collections, and this marvelous tradition outreaches its most powerful moment with Francesco I, who built a little octagonal heart-shaped space inside the gallery that could contain all the best of such collections.
Exploring Florence on foot may sound as one dull experience: nothing as distant from reality; in fact, this is the most ingenious and comfortable way to tour this City.
