The only island of river Tevere within the city limits, it is characterized by an iconic ship shape. The legend says it was formed by some wheat sheaf taken by Campus Martius during the rebellion against the last Roman king Tarquinius the Superb (510 B.C.). During the Republican age it was connected to both sides of Tevere by two brides (Cestius and Fabricius).
Several outstanding monuments have found their place on the island: the church of San Bartolomeo, the “Fatebenefratelli” hospital and the church of San Giovanni Calibita.
