The museum is home to an array of artistic masterpieces, the best-known being Michelangelo’s “David”. Housed in the main gallery this statue towers above the onlookers. Ensure you walk around it and be amazed at Michelangelo’s genius from every angle. It is without doubt an incredible artistic accomplishment; carved from a single block of Carrara marble it was sculpted by Michelangelo in his early twenties. Standing 17 feet (5.17 metres) high, it depicts David, the biblical hero who killed the giant Goliath. Unveiled in 1504 this statue came to symbolize the defence of freedoms embodied by the Florentine Republic.
The Accademia also holds a number of unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo as well as pieces by Botticelli, Paolo Uccello and Andrea del Sarto, to name but a few.
You’re sure to enjoy this tour of the Accademia and hear captivating facts and anecdotes from your expert guide who will ensure your visit is informative and memorable.
