We pass the Capitol square and relish the greatest view of the ancient Roman world. On our way down we come across the Theatre of Marcellus within the Saint Angelo neighbourhood. We then navigate through the Jewish Ghetto and it’s community. The tour completes its journey overlooking the sacred temples of Largo Argentina.
What makes Walking Tour - Rome Center and Jewish Ghetto a unique experience ?
Situated between Via del Corso and Via dei For Imperiali, Piazza Venezia was refashioned between the late 1800s and the early 1900s, to erect the Vittorio Emanuele ll monument. The piazza takes its name from the Palazzo that was gifted to the republic of Venice in the 1400s. Also on the piazza is the Palazzo Bonaparte.
The Capitol hill is the smallest of the founding 7 hills of Rome. It symbolises the epicentre of the Roman Empire which once housed the most important Temples of the city. Antiquities in ceramic date back to 1300bc, a testament that the Capitol Hill was inhabited way before the creation of Rome itself.
At the foot of the Capitol extends the archeological area of Marcellus’ Theatre, walking on the old roman pavement one circles around Ottavia’s portico, an Imperial Roman monument. During the medieval period this area was densely populated and an important fish market was held here as it was close to the river, the market was active up until the end of the 1800s.
The antique Ghetto of Rome took up a great part of the Sant’Angelo, between the Capitol Hill and the Tiber, literally in front of the Tiber island. The Jewish community of Rome have been here since antiquity and even today the Ghetto houses the largest community in Italy.
From outside the Great Synagogue of Rome that overlooks the Tiber Island with its ancient broken bridge.
The old neighbourhood was demolished in 1926 to build new buildings, however revealing one of the most important archeological sites in the city. Inaugurated on the 29th of April 1929 by Benito Mussolini, the sacred area of Largo Argentina has one of the largest complex of republican Temples visible today.
