It was built in conjunction with the construction of the Janicolense Walls, extension of the Leonine Walls in defense of the Gianicolo, wanted by Pope Urban VIII Barberini, to replace the previous Porta Portuensis.
The Porta Portuensis was one of the southern gates of the Aurelian Walls of Rome.

The fountain is located in the center of Piazza Testaccio and was made entirely of travertine. The choice of the motif of the amphora, very innovative in its combination of elegance and practicality, is to be found in the very symbol of the ward, which in turn has its roots in the ancient history of the area; already from the second century BC, in fact, on the left bank of the Tiber there were the storage warehouses of the terracotta amphorae containing the supplies of wine and oil destined for Rome, which traveled mainly by river. The oil containers, in particular, could not be reused by law, and therefore had to be destroyed once emptied. Over the years the shards (“testae” in Latin) piled up on the ground behind the warehouses came to form a hill up to 35 meters high, which since the Middle Ages was called “Testaccio”.

Monte Testaccio, also popularly known as Monte dei Cocci, is an artificial hill located in the port area of ancient Rome and near the warehouses (horrea).
