What makes Small group tour of Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica a unique experience ?
The bronze pinecone in the courtyard, is four metres high and two and a half metres wide, and dates back to the 2nd century and has a meaning of immortality and rebirth.
The Gallery of Maps, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII, was realised between 1580 and 1585. The frescoes were painted by Italian and Flemish artists under the direction of Ignazio Danti, mathematician, astronomer and cosmographer.
The Pio Clementino Museum in the Vatican Museums was founded by Clement XIV in 1771. Here there is also the famous Laocoon group, a Roman copy of the 1st century A.D. from a 2nd century B.C. Greek bronze original by Hagesandros, Athanadoros and Polydoros, found in Rome on the Esquiline Hill in 1506.
The Raphael Rooms, also known as the Vatican Rooms, are four rooms frescoed by the great Urbino painter who frescoed them with his pupils.
The most famous is the Stanza della Segnatura where the four branches of knowledge are depicted: Theology, Philosophy, Justice and Poetry.
The Sistine Chapel is decorated with Michelangelo’s splendid frescoes. His splendid works cover the vault and the back wall (with the Last Judgement) above the altar. Inside the Chapel, the conclave, baptism and other official ceremonies are held by the Pope himself.
It is the largest of the four papal basilicas in Rome and is often described as the largest church in the world both in terms of its size and, metaphorically, its importance as the centre of Catholicism. Inside is Michelangelo’s famous Pieta, a work from the master’s youthful years (1499) and striking for the harmony and whiteness of its surfaces. The space below the dome is marked by the monumental St. Peter’s Baldachin, designed by the genius of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and erected between 1624 and 1633. Made of bronze taken from the Pantheon, it is almost 30 metres high and is supported by four twisted columns in imitation of the Temple of Solomon and the ciborium of the old Constantinian basilica, whose columns had been recovered and inserted as ornaments into the pillars of Michelangelo’s dome.
