Built between 1473 and 1481, the Sistine Chapel it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The fame of the Sistine Chapel lies mainly in the frescoes that decorate the interior, most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment, both by Michelangelo.
Planned in the 15th century by Pope Nicholas V and then Pope Julius II and designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter’s is one of the most renowned works of Italian Renaissance and Baroque architecture and the largest church in the world by interior measure. Please note that access to the Basilica is subject of availability and in case of last minute closure priority access tot he Basilica will not be possible.
