Stop At: Piazza Navona, 00186 Rome Italy
Piazza Navona is littered with Baroque masterpieces, including those of the world famous “Bernini” The area was originally used as an Athletics stadium in the year of 80 AD under Emperor Titus, which later turned into the city’s market in the 1500’s. The square has kept its original shape and the surrounding buildings were erected upon the ancient crowd stand foundations.

On the summit of the Capitoline Hill, the most important of Rome’s seven hills, this square is the first modern one to be designed in Rome and testifies of the great ability and grace of Michelangelo as an architect. An imposing bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was erected in the centre of the square – for centuries believed to be Emperor Constantine’s and thus saved from the pagan iconoclasm.

Tucked away in a small piazza, this beautiful baroque fountain attracts thousands of visitors each year. Rome’s largest fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732, completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, and depicts Neptune’s chariot being led by Tritons with seahorses. Follow the tradition and throw in a coin to ensure your return to the Eternal City! An extra fee will apply if transportation is requested.
