“Rubra” used to be the ancient Latin name of the hills at sunset. “… Rocky and austere village, refuge for fishermen and farmers”, as the Nobel Price Eugenio Montale described the village of Monteroaao, summer retreat of his family. The “carruggi” are a setting for lively lemon trees.

The web of “carruggi” (narrow lanes) and steep stairways converges into the main square overlooking the sea. This is the center of the village, where stands the church dedicated to Saint Margaret of Antioch (1318) with its foundations in the sea.

In ancient times, the village was extended to the southward, but the strong slumps were two of the landslides of the hill. This is a long cliff, connected with the village by 365 steps. This village was built around the XI century and still preserves its charm.
