Basilica of Santa Maria Degli Angeli

This stop is essential to understand Francis’s life.
Your guide will wait for you at Santa Maria Degli Angeli, where Francis prayed and died ( the Porziuncola). The Porziuncola is a 9th-century little church enclosed in a Papal Basilica, is the most sacred place for the Franciscans.

Santa Chiara Basilica
You will enjoy strolling around the narrow streets of the ancient town and reach the Church of Santa Chiara. Its Byzantine Crucifix revealed to the Saint his mission. In this Basilica, pilgrims can venerate the mortal remains of St. Clare, and pray silently in front of the Crucifix, using the Saint’s words.
Note: When the Basilica closes to visitors on Sunday, and religious holiday ( 1st and 6th Jan / 15th Aug /1sr Nov / 8th and 25th Dec ), the guide explains the church and its history from outside.
On the way to Piazza del Comune (Town Hall Square), you will pass the Oratorio, the birthplace of St. Francis, with the remarkable Augustan Temple of Minerva.

Basilica of Saint Francis
The main highlight is the Basilica of Saint Francis, the goal of countless pilgrimages, whose Crypt contains the tomb of the Saint. Artists from all over Italy, such as Giotto, Cimabue, and Simone Martini, frescoed the dark vaulted Lower Church. The walls of the upper Church are decorated mostly by Giotto with Scenes of the Old and New Testament. It is a real mystic place also for not-Christians, immersed in a spectacular environment.
