Start your Vacanze Romane with the visit of the Vatican Museums!
Famous throughout the world, the multiple galleries and rooms can take days to visit although only just over a third of the art that Popes throughout the centuries have collected is on show to the public. The museums house an immense collection that includes some of the most important masterpieces of Renaissance art in the world along with some of the most precious Ancient Rome and Egyptian statues.

Definitely the most known work of art of all time, the frescoes by Michelangelo are considered the finest work of art ever created by Man. The iconic narration of the vault dedicaded to the Holy Creation and the Bible is a pendant of the huge wall scene (60 feet tall) just behind the altar: the “Last Judgment” with its 391 figures. The side walls welcomed Michelangelo’s creation with pre-existing stories of the Life of Jesus and Moses by Botticelli and the Renaissance masters. Despite the religious dedication, the meaning of the Sistine Chapel trascends the time and space of the Church and reveals its universal meaning for mankind.

The largest Basilica in the world is also home to worldwide masterpieces like the famous Pietà by Michelangelo! it even houses an underground crypt for Popes, of which can be visited. The Basilica has a big influence from Michelangelo and you can see his art work throughout. The Basilica was originally built above the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, where the Pope visits every Christmas or Easter Time.

Day 2: Delight Of Rome – Borghese Gallery and Rome City Center Walking Tour

Located within the Borghese Gardens, the Borghese Gallery is a real gem in the heart of Rome- a museum that houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and frescoes by masters such as Canova, Caravaggio, Bernini and Tiziano.

Stop At: Villa Borghese Gardens, Piazzale Napoleone I, 00197 Rome Italy
Being the green lung of Rome, the Borghese Gardens – adjacent to Villa Borghese, are located on the Pincian Hill, close to Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo. Developed in 1606 by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who wanted to turn his former vineyard into the most extensive gardens built in Rome, they feature 80 hectares of a stunning natural setting that houses beautiful monuments, fountains, and flora.

A picture with the Spanish Steps in the background is a must do in Rome! This modern monument was arranged three centuries ago in order to find an architectural connection between the Fountain of the Barcaccia on the street level, by Pietro Bernini, and the Renaissance church standing on the top of the slope. The Spanish Steps are unique for their unusual plan and shape designed by Alessandro Specchi and Francesco De Sanctis. Traditional icon of the Italian Dolce Vita, the Spanish Steps cannot be missed during a visit to the Eternal city.

Stop At: Trevi Fountain, Piazza di Trevi, 00187 Rome Italy
The backdrop to many classic films such as “Roman Holiday” and “La Dolce Vita” the fountain is the biggest of its kind in Rome. Work on the fountain started in 1732 after the Popes competition during the Baroque era to build something as beautiful as the Spanish Steps. The creator of the world famous fountain actually didn’t win the contest but due to the outcry in Rome over a Florentine having won, Nicola Salvi was given the go ahead!

Stop At: Pantheon, Piazza della Rotonda, 00186 Rome Italy
The Pantheon, a former Roman temple, is located within central Rome, within walking distance to other well known sites as Navona Square and the Trevi Fountain. Now a functional church, it is the burial place for many Resniense masters such as Raphael as well as 2 kings of Italy. The monument is very unique with a circular, Oculus roof allowing sunlight and even rain into the beautiful church. The original building was constructed almost 2000 years ago and Michelangelo was noted as saying that the design is of Angels and cannot be of human concept.

Piazza Navona is littered with Baroque masterpieces, including those of the world famous “Bernini” The area was originally used as an Athletics stadium in the year of 80 AD under Emperor Titus, which later turned into the city’s market in the 1500’s. The square has kept its original shape and the surrounding buildings were erected upon the ancient crowd stand foundations.

Day 3: Ancient Rome Experience

Stop At: Colosseum, Piazza del Colosseo, 00184 Rome Italy
One of the new wonders of the modern world is also the largest ever Amphitheatre constructed during Ancient times was built with Volcanic rock mixed with brick and held an estimated 50-80 thousand people. It was a real hub of entertainment in central Rome, with regular shows, animal hunts and gladiatorial battles. Races were not held within the Colosseum due to the nearby Circo Massimo race track.

Stop At: Roman Forum, Largo della Salara Vecchia 5/6, 00186 Rome Italy
The political and business centre of ancient Rome, the warn away paths are covered in history. This is where the citizens came to listen to speeches, to meet the senators or to see people like Julius Caesar or Cicero. The ruins tell a story, and it is the story of Rome and its politics, with the likes of the ancient Curia (the Senate) that is still visible, but also with the impressive marble columns of temples which were erected for the first time in V century BC.
