Initially the current Basilica of San Marco was just a small temple dedicated to San Teodoro, then in 820 the Venetians stole San Marco’s remains from Alexandria and the rebuilding of the old temple began.
The Basilica is a Greek cross with a central dome; on each bay there are four hemispherical domes; in the thirteenth century on each dome small bulbous domes were built.
The interior was covered with gold mosaics.
