Meeting point for the tour and the central square of Rome. The piazza or square is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and next to Trajan’s Forum. The main artery, the Via di Fori Imperiali begins there and leads past the Roman Forum to the Colosseum.

Following a competition in 1717 the steps were designed by the little-known Francesco de Sanctis.In the Piazza di Spagna at the base is the Early Baroque fountain called Fontana della Barcaccia , built in 1627–29 and often credited to Pietro Bernini, father of a more famous son, Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
