What makes Colosseum, Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel Private Day Tour a unique experience ?
The Vatican Museums (‘I Museu Vatican) are some of the largest museums in the world with an enormous collection that varies from ancient Roman and Egyptian artifacts, religious objects, beautifully painted rooms, and even modern art. The 26 different museums of the Vatican are housed in a complex of multiple Apostolic palaces and are by far the most popular museum destination in Rome, in part because of the famous Sistine Chapel. During your visit, you will marvel at the many art treasures that the popes have collected in 54 halls since the 16th century.
The absolute highlight of the route through the Vatican museums is a visit to the Sistine Chapel (‘Capella Sistina’). The name is derived from the founder of the chapel, pope Sixtus IV. The impressive ceiling of this 15th-century Sistine Chapel was painted in the 16th century by Michelangelo. It portrays the story of creation, the great flood and other scenes. The side walls are equally beautiful with paintings of the life of Jesus made by Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio and others. The wall behind the alter shows Michelangelo’s painting of the ‘Last Judgement’. The Sistine Chapel is mostly known for being the space where the cardinals meet for conclave when electing a new pope. When a new pope is being elected, smoke comes from the chapel’s chimney twice a day. White smoke means a new pope has been elected, while black smoke means the cardinals were not yet successful in their mission.
Flavian emperor Vespasian had this amphitheater that could accommodate 65,000 spectators built in the year 72 CE. Construction of the Colosseum took eight years and was financed with plunder taken from Jerusalem. The Colosseum, also called the Amphitheatrum Flavium, was opened by Emperor Titus with games and festivities that lasted 100 days and cost the lives of 5,000 animals. Emperor Domitian, Titus’ successor, later expanded the amphitheater with an extra story and a number of spaces underneath the Colosseum. This made the Colosseum of Rome the largest amphitheater in Roman history, and it is considered one of the seven wonders of the world.
It was not until the 19th century that excavations of the center of the Roman empire at the base of the Capitol finally began. During the reign of Emperor Augustus (27 BCE – 14 CE), ancient Rome was already home to over a million Romans, and the Forum Romanum was the political, legal, and religious center of the Roman Empire.
During your visit, you walk by the many ruins of the Forum Romanum. Unfortunately, many buildings were damaged by earthquakes and plundering after the 7th century.
You get to the Forum Romanum via the Via Sacra, the oldest road in Rome. The name ‘Sacred street’ is derived from the many temples and other holy sites that lined this street. Examples are the round Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Saturn, the basilica of Maxentius, and the official residences of the pontifex Maximus, the arch of Septimus Severus, and the rex sacrorum. You will also see the remains of arches, the podium, market halls, and much more.
Palatino (Palatine hill)
Palatine hill is one of the seven hills of Rome. During the 9th century BC, it became a residential neighborhood that would later be home to important Romans such as Cicero, Crassus, Augustus, and Tiberius. This last emperor ensured the 43-meter high hill’s reputation as an imperial residence. According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus on Palatine Hill in 753 BCE.
Today, Palatine Hill is a major archaeological park and connected to the Forum Romanum. In the center of Palatine hill, you can find – among other monuments – the impressive buildings of emperor Domitian (Domus Augustana) and the 16th-century gardens of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. The Antiquarium can also be found on Palatine Hill. This museum contains models of the first settlements and archaeological finds.
