Stop At: Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant’Angelo, Lungotevere Castello 50, 00193 Rome Italy
The imposing Castel Sant’Angelo (Castel of the Holy Angel) is the only building that has followed the development of the city of Rome for about 2000 years, the other Roman monuments have had different destinations, some were reduced to ruins and others were used as quarries to collect materials and recycle them into new constructions.
The Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of the structure in the year 135 with the intention of using it as a tomb for himself and his family. It was completed in the year 139, and a short time later, it was converted into a military structure that would be included into the Aurelian Walls in the year 403.
Though the Castel Sant’angelo has a long and interesting history, most of the exhibits inside now relate to the period when the structure was converted into a fortress and a military base and then later as a papal residence.
Important:
– Redeem your voucher with the staff with orange umbrella in front of the entrance to the Castel Sant’Angelo.
