Today this is the main entrance to the excavations. And in antiquity these were the secondary gates due to the steep ascent of the road, which was impassable for heavily loaded wagons.

It hosts a collection of archaeological finds: everyday objects, furniture, and plaster casts of eruption victims.

Pompeii’s Basilica was built in the 2nd century BC and is the oldest preserved in Italy.

It is a Roman temple built in 120 BC and dedicated to the Greek and Roman god Apollo, the town’s most important religious building and has ancient origins.

In any ancient Roman city, the main square is called the same: Forum. The Forum is the heart of the commercial, social, political and religious life of the city. In the center of the square is the main temple, it is dedicated to the Capitoline Triad – the main gods of the Roman pantheon – Jupiter, Juno and Minerva.

The name was due to a theory attributing the temple to the worship of Emperor Vespasian himself. At the time of the eruption the building was in the process of either being built or renovated. The small temple stands at the back of the atrium and has four columns on the façade; access to it is gained through two small staircases at the sides of the podium, where a statue of the emperor was situated.

This is the largest and most luxurious house in the city, decorated with great taste: undoubtedly, this is a classic example of an aristocratic dwelling during the Roman Empire.

The Vettii brothers were wealthy shopkeepers. Their house is one of the finest dwellings in the city, which is noticeable in comparison with other houses.

During a walk through the excavations, you will often see rooms with “G”-shaped counters with holes into which boilers with heated food were inserted. Archaeologists and guides call those places thermopolies.
