Piazza San Francesco (known by many as Piazza Mazzini) was the protagonist of many events related to the history of the city; in ancient times it was a grassy lawn and took on its current appearance only towards the early nineteenth century when the Pantheon was built, placed on the relief that is to the west of the square. Thanks to the local literature you can find evidence of the past: in 1324 the militias of Castruccio Antelminelli, known as Castracani, encamped there, when his troops won against the historical traitor of Pistoia Filippo Tedici.

The baptistery of San Giovanni in corte or Ritondo di Pistoia is located in the Piazza del Duomo, in front of the cathedral, in the space of the ancient curtis regia. It is considered among the greatest expressions of Tuscan Gothic, as it brings together Florentine, Pisan and Sienese elements.

Here stand the Palazzo Vescovile, the Palazzo Comunale, a construction from the end of the 13th century which houses the Civic Museum, the Palazzo Pretorio, dating back to the mid-14th century and still today the seat of the court, the Baptistery and the Cathedral of San Zeno.
