Stop At: Zona Archeologica di Mura Pregne, Contrada Brucato SNC, 90018 Termini Imerese, Sicily Italy
Through a suggestive route to the slopes of Monte San Calogero, travelers will wander among olive groves, pastures and Mediterranean scrub, discovering some of the most interesting and little-known traces of Sicily’s past. The “cyclopean” Mura Pregne, over 10 meters high and erected with imposing limestone blocks, whose function is still partly obscure, are what remains of an ancient community, lived, it is assumed, in the 6th century BC Nearby is the so-called Dolmen. Both are an archaeological “unicum” of western Sicily. Continuing along the path, of high naturalistic value, one enters the medieval Brucato, a busy center with churches and a castle, whose ruins are still visible and appreciable. The town, founded in the 12th century, was abandoned just two centuries later due to the baronial wars that tore Sicily apart. Wide views of the Tyrrhenian coast and the Madonie enrich the excursion. For those who want it, a rich gastronomic break can be made to pay homage to the local agricultural specialty, the artichoke.
