In those years, a famous correspondence was made for the coastal towers of Elba between Cosimo I de ‘Medici and the Lords of Piombino (Appiani family), where the prince of Florence, worried about the incursions of Turkish pirates, ordered the Appiani to build coastal defense works in order to increase the defense of their territory.

It is assumed that the tower was erected following the famous destruction of Grassera in 1553 by the Turks.

In 1882, the tower was restored, building a small square tower on the upper side that houses a clock on three sides and for this reason it is often called the Clock Tower.
