The villa was built as a royal residence; it is located in the Posillipo district [1] [2] and is one of the three official residences of the President of the Italian Republic and for this reason it cannot be visited, except at certain times of the year. It has an area of 66,056 square meters.

In ancient times the village, developed around via Marechiaro, took its name from the church of Santa Maria del Faro.
