Villa Rosebery, renamed “Maria Pia” in 1934, is a monumental complex, one of the main landmarks of neoclassicism in Naples. The villa was built as a royal residence; it is located in the Posillipo district [1] [2] and is one of the three official residences of the President of the Italian Republic and for this reason it cannot be visited, except at certain times of the year. It has an area of 66,056 square meters.

In ancient times the village, developed around via Marechiaro, took its name from the church of Santa Maria del Faro. The name Marechiaro does not come, as is commonly thought, from the transparency of the waters of the Posillipo sea, but from their quiet. From an administrative point of view it is part of Bagnoli, a district of the municipality of Naples. The island is not accessible as it houses the Juvenile Penal Institute of Naples, and its small port towards Coroglio was used by NATO until its transfer.
