Stop At: Tempio di Giove Capitolino, Via Del Tempio Di Giove, 18, 00186 Pompeii Italy

The Civic Forum was the main square of Pompeii, the center of political, commercial, and religious life. Located in the middle of the oldest part of the city, it was the center of urban evolution from the 7th century BCE up to the final destruction of Pompeii by the eruption of Vesuvius in CE 79.

Stop At: Macellum, Via Villa Dei Misteri Regio VII, Building 12, 80045 Pompeii Italy

During the Early Imperial period, the Forum was rennovated with travertine paving, material also used to rebuild the Porticus. New monuments were built along the east side, dedicated to the Imperial cult. New honorific statues, those of Augustus mostly, were added within this space.

Stop At: Basilica, Vicolo Delle Terme 2, 80045 Pompeii Italy

Probably constructed near the 2nd century BCE, this Basilica is one of the most magnificent buildings of the Civil Forum. Standing in the southwest of the forum, it is bounded on the north by Via Marina, the street that led to the harbor. The main hall consists of a nave surrounded by an aisle.

The Macellum of Pompeii was located along one side of the Civil Forum. Along its eastern side, there was a central structure dedicated to the imperial cult. The Macellum hosts archeological finds such as food remain items of daily use and necessity, and even examples of Roman wall paintings.

The Forum Baths are one of the best-preserved bathing complexes in the Roman world, especially in terms of their decoration. Built in 80 CE, the fine stucco decoration probably dates to the Augustan period (27 BCE – 14 CE). Bathers warmed up in this room before entering the caldarium (hot room).

Here you find yourself in the main atrium of the House of the Faun, an elegant section of one of Pompeii’s most luxurious homes. The striking statue of the faun in the center of the pool gave the home its name: look at the rich marble floor and the beautifully styled mosaic wall.

Stop At: Panis Pompeii, Via Lepanto, 146, 80045 Pompei NA, Italy

This bakery may have belonged to N. Popidius Priscus, who lived in the house next door. This is a typical Pompeian bakery, with its wood-fired oven and volcanic millstones. The stones are fixed to a brick base and rotated on an hourglass-shaped element that was connected to a bar turned by a mule.

This seaside view of Pompeii places you in the Triangular Forum of the city, located to the south and near the city’s Large Theatre. Within this unique forum rests a Doric-style temple with a puzzling tomb-like structure at the base of its steps.

Stop At: Teatro Grande, Via Paganora 19/A, Pompeii Italy

The Large Theatre was built into a natural hill at Pompeii in the 2nd century BCE. The lowermost section of the seating, the ima, was reserved for senators, magistrates, and other noble people. In the middle section, sat the middle class and the top section (summa) was reserved for the plebeians.

Stop At: Quadriportico dei Teatri, Via Plinio, 101, 80045 Pompei NA, Italy

You are now standing within the quadriporticus located behind the stage of the Large Theatre. It originally provided a porticoed area for the theatre’s guests. After the earthquake of 62 CE, the complex lost its original function and instead hosted a training area for the gladiators of the city.

The temple of Isis dates to the 2nd century BCE, and was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis, whose cult was widespread throughout the Roman Empire. The temple you are looking at was re-built by the freedman Numerius Popidius Ampliatus for his son Celsinus after the earthquake of 62 CE.

Stop At: Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane), Via Del Foro, 26, Pompeii Italy

The Stabian Baths were the largest and the oldest bathing establishment at Pompeii. It was built in the 2nd century BCE but it was remodeled in the early days of the Roman colony. The small round frigidarium had its walls and niches painted to represent a wide garden with a blue sky above.
