Visit: Sassi di Matera, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, 75100, Matera Italy

You will be introduced to the centenary history of Matera town, which was considered a shame for Italian people in the 50s, then was awarded as Unesco World Heritage in 1993, thanks to an intelligent restoration work of the entire sassi area. Our expert local guide will show you this complex of natural caves dug in the rock, which developed into a more complex structure located within two large natural amphitheatres: the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano, these 2 are the main areas of the town. The areas are rich in rupestrian churches, religious areas enriched with frescoes, painted following the Byzantine style, which was very common in all the areas of the ravines in Puglia and Basilicata.

Visit: Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, Vico Solitario 11, 75100, Matera Italy

You will visit a typical house digged in the rocks, called in Italian “casa-grotta”, meaning grotto-house. It is a dwelling with furniture and tools of the time in the “Sasso Caveoso”. You will see that a grotto house could be very small, even if it was actually used from local inhabitants both as their house and as stable for their animals, chickens, donkeys, rabbits. They had only one main entrance from where light came in into the house and they usually had an inside system for collecting waters, like a cistern. The grotto house was generally used only for sleeping, during the day men put animals to pasture, while women and children spent their time chatting together in the courtyards in front of their houses. Today these dwellings have totally been abandoned.

Visit: Ponte Viadotto – Acquedotto Madonna della Stella, Gravina in Puglia Italy

In Gravina town the Bridge of Madonna della Stella is the main attraction linked to the last episode of James Bond 2020.

This bridge was built in the 17th century in order to allow people from the center of Gravina town to reach the other side of the ravine, where the church of Madonna della Stella was located. The bridge, in fact, goes through a deep ravine, called Botromagno ravine, being the ravines a peculiarity of Apulian territory in this calcareous area. With the Orsini family the bridge was also used as an aqueduct bringing to Gravina town the waters from the close spring of Sant’Angelo. The structure of the bridge counts 25 arches which were destroyed during a flood and replaced by a stronger tufa support. You will walk through this bridge and see the exact point from where Daniel Craig (or his stuntman!) jumped over the ravine.
