Explore the stunning historic center on foot, discovering hidden treasures along the waterfront. During this 3-hour tour, you will see the most important and fascinating attractions in the city, such as the Castle of St. George.
The Castle of San Giorgio is an ancient Genoese fortification on the hill of the city of La Spezia called “hill of Poggio”. The castle can be reached from via XXVII Marzo which crosses what remains today of the belt of walls erected in the 14th century to defend the city.
You will see the Cathedral of Cristo Re.
La Spezia Cathedral (Duomo della Spezia; Cattedrale di Cristo Re; “Cathedral of Christ King”) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in La Spezia, Italy. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. It was built between 1956 and 1975 to designs by Adalberto Libera. La Spezia became an episcopal seat in 1927, when Pope Pius XI created the new Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. The ancient church of the Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta was elevated to the status of pro-cathedral for the new diocese on 19 March 1929, but the project of the construction of a new cathedral was immediately set in motion. The chosen site was on a hilltop cleared at that time in order to link the historic districts in the center of the town with those to the east, where previously had stood a Capuchin friary.
The nicest sights of La Spezia are to be had just walking around this charming city, there are superb examples of art nouveau buildings.
Via del Prione is the main pedestrian shopping area in La Spezia. There are many shops and cafes around. Nice place to stroll around during your visit there.
When walking down through Via del Prione you’ll find this lovely place, with the fountain-monument designed by the architects Antonio Leone and Cesarina Zanetti. This was executed by the sculptor Viliano Tarabella di Pietrasanta, was made of Carrara marble and finished in 1958. It includes a hollow central body, formed by two lateral elements, representing two veins that converge upwards, where there is a jet of water (you may see a heart shape, where you can take lovely pictures!). Symbolically, it represents the sea to highlight the marine root of the city; in the generation of water flowing from the base and in the ancestral form of the circle, is emphasises everything flows towards the north. The choice of design makes the composition calm, stable and composed, contrasting with the disorderly plant of the city, which grew up amidst mountains and invasions.
Built in 1900 in the heart of the working-class neighborhood Quartiere Umberto (Piazza Brin). The Parish Church and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health (or also Madonna della Scorza) in La Spezia is a Catholic church and is located in the historic city center, in Piazza Benedetto Brin, in the heart of the Umberto I district.
One more great and very beautiful catholic church. It was built in 1901. Church of Our Lady of the Snows is a Catholic church located in Viale Garibaldi, in the city center of La Spezia.
During the tour, you will have time to enjoy traditional dishes and the best local specialties.
