For centuries, the massive dome that sits atop the Florence Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore was considered an architectural impossibility by most experts in the field. How could it be built? But in 1420, Filippo Brunelleschi finally pulled off what was thought to be impossible when he finished his construction masterpiece, which continues to stand today as one of the most iconic structures in all of Italy and even all of Europe.
