The countryside surrounding the city offers postcard landscapes: a succession of rolling hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, with roads lined with rows of cypresses.
Montespertoli is located along the “Via Volterrana” which connects to the Via Francigena. Some noble Florentine families, in particular, have chosen this area to build their elegant castles and villas: the Guicciardini, Frescobaldi, Acciaioli, Ruccelai, Strozzi, Barbadori are just some of the nobles who lived in Montespertoli. The castle of Montegufoni (property of the Acciaioli) can be admired along the Volterrana going towards Montespertoli coming from Florence, while the Castle of Sonnino, which belonged to the Machiavelli family for centuries, is located at the beginning of Montespertoli.
