Stop At: Piazza Vecchia, 24129 Bergamo Italy

This square was for centuries the fulcrum of the political power of Bergamo and still today it continues to be the place where you meet and live your free time. The square is overlooked by majestic and imposing buildings arranged according to a harmonious and perfect geometry, so much so as to make Le Corbusier say that “you can no longer touch even a stone, it would be a crime”. The Palazzo della Ragione, which dates back to the end of 1100 and represents the oldest existing Lombard municipal seat, and the Civic Tower, known as “il Campanone”, stand out. In the center of Piazza Vecchia you can admire the Contarini fountain, donated to the city in 1780 by Podestà Alvise Contarini On the opposite side of the square stands the Palazzo Nuovo, seat of the Municipality until 1873 and today of the Angelo Mai Library which preserves a book heritage consisting of incunabula , sixteenth century, prints, manuscripts and other finds of inestimable value, making it one of the most important libraries in Italy.

The Venetian walls of Bergamo are an architectural construction dating back to the sixteenth century, well preserved having not suffered any war events over the centuries. This enclosure consists of 14 bulwarks, 2 floors, 32 sentry boxes, 100 openings for guns, two powder cases, 4 gates Sant’Agostino, San Giacomo, Sant’Alessandro and San Lorenzo, the latter also known as Porta Garibaldi. To all this there is to be added a myriad of military sorties and passages of which, in part, the memory has been lost, such as the Porta del Pantano inferior, dating back to the thirteenth century which was a connection with via Borgo Canale, the ramparts, externally , give the city the appearance of an impregnable fortress, but since they were built in the second half of the 16th century, the affirmation of the parabolic bombard cannon makes it the swan song of this type of military construction.
From 9 July 2017 the Venetian walls became part of UNESCO, as a World Heritage Site
