The Campo Imperatore plateau, located at an altitude varying between 1500 and 1900 meters, is about twenty kilometers long. What is most striking in Campo Imperatore are the spaces, the vast dimensions that are always totally visible. The endless pastures are used for the summer pasture of sheep flocks and herds of cattle and horses that transhuman in Puglia in winter, in a ritual that has been repeated for thousands of years, transhumance.

Itinerary

Stop At: Campo Imperatore, SR17bis, Assergi Italy

Medium difficulty E-MTB excursion (good physical and technical preparation is required).
Ascent to Campo Imperatore (2,100 meters above sea level) using the cable car (the rate is excluded from the cost of the excursion), we will cross the plain of Campo Imperatore along paths and mule tracks of transhumance for about 1 hour that will lead us to the lakes of the plateau, alternating breaks in the most characteristic places.

Stop At: Lago Pietranzoni, 67100 L’Aquila AQ, Italy

Lake Pietranzoni is a very popular location for photographers and tourists who often take pictures with the Corno Grande in the background. We will cycle for 20 minutes, to also visit the suggestive ruins of the thirteenth-century church-monastery of Santa Maria del Monte (1616 m), a large complex built by Cistercian monks.

Stop At: Lago Racollo, Strada statale 17bis, 67020 Santo Stefano di Sessanio Italy

Immersed in the nature of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, we will continue our bicycle excursion pedaling for another twenty minutes, among wild horses and grazing cows, to discover the beauty of the natural pools of water used to water the livestock . After a short break at the Racollo refuge, we will also visit the Passaneta and Barisciano lakes.

Stop At: Rifugio Montecristo, loc. Montecristo, 67100 Assergi AQ, Italy

Stop at the refuge, with a pleasant 45-minute ride, to taste the typical products (excluded from the cost of the excursion).

Pass By: Gran Sasso, Italy

From the Piana di Campo Imperatore it is possible to admire the Corno Grande massif, in the north western end of the plateau and the Aquila, Brancastello, Prena and Camicia mountains to the north east by the eastern ridge of the massif.
