The extraordinary fortress is today nestled on a gentle green hill 20 kilometers from Andria nestled in the Alta Murgia National Park. Built around 1240, Castel del Monte became the permanent seat of the court of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, who became the sovereign of the Kingdom of Sicily at only three years of age. The monarch, nicknamed “Stupor Mundi” for the eclecticism and vastness of his culture, bequeathed to his Castle all the mystery that surrounded his figure. Since 1996 registered on the list of UNESCO World Heritage monuments. The mysterious octagonal plan of the manor, perhaps used as an astronomical observatory or an imposing hunting manor, differs significantly in its structure from all the other castles in Puglia.
