The excursion starts directly from the town, after a short while you reach the "old cemetery", a small group of tombs dating back to the early 1900s, immersed in the lush vegetation, climbing along a beautiful path you reach an altitude of 400 meters above sea level . Gobustan occupies the south-eastern spur of the Great Caucasian Range and situated 60 km south of Baku. It is a monticulate semi-desert area dissected by numerous gullies and ravines and Gobustan, in translation, means "ravine land"

In the State Historical-Artistic Reserve Gobustan, one can also see the sites of the first people, remnants of a large prehistoric cromlech and other testimonies about the inhabitants of the region of the Stone Age and subsequent periods. Mud volcanoes are closely associated with hydrocarbon and petrochemical stores underground, hence the gas trying to escape to the surface.
