Incredible tour to a 'Faja' with a story
'Fajã' means a flat piece of land at the sea level formed by materials detached from the cliffs. You will get to know Fajã dos Padres, a fertile and unique place that was owned by the jesuits (hence the name 'dos Padres') for more than 150 years.
The experience starts with an incredible 3 minutes cable car trip that comfortably will transport you from Quinta Grande to Fajã dos Padres, along a huge cliff over 300 meters high.
For about an hour, you will walk along ancient paths opened along the orchards of subtropical fruit trees.
During the tour you will get to know the story of this place, that is inhabited since the beginning of Madeira island colonisation. You'll learn the methods used for farming a number of subtropical fruits, some quite exotic. 1856 The Untold Story
On 8 June 1856 a total of 194 people, descendants from the Bounty, arrived on Norfolk Island from Pitcairn Island aboard the Morayshire. This consisted of 40 men, 47 women, 54 boys, and 53 girls. They arrived in cold, wet blustery conditions. Few had ever been to sea before, They were seasick, homesick, and heartsick. The journey of 6,00 km / 3,700 miles took five weeks. They arrived to a recently abandoned penal settlement set aside for the ‘worst of the worst’ it was full of ghosts and memories. It was a large and frightening testimony of man’s inhumanity to man. The 1856 untold story will follow their journey in the World Heritage Listed Kingston area.
