Etna and Alcantara Gorges Excursion


Discover Etna and the Alcantara Gorges! The perfect mix of adventure and refreshing relax! The excursion begins by SUV or minivan (up to 8 people), together with our experienced guides. Our first stop is an off-road trip to the 2002 eruption lava fron. Continuing along the Via Mareneve, in the middle of the Ragabo pine forest, we will arrive at the starting point of our trekking to the Monti Sartorius craters. We will continue on foot, starting at 1650 metres and arriving at an altitude of 1750 metres, an easy walk suitable for everyone. We will then explore a lava flow cave, the Grotta dei Ladroni, equipped with helmets and torches. We will stop at a local chalet or restaurant for lunch (included in the price: a first course, drink and coffee). After lunch, we will reach the characteristic Alcantara Gorges, also known as the Larderia Gorges. A refreshing and relaxing visit to a wonderful place. You can cool off in the Alcantara river in the middle of the canyon of the Gorges!


2002 Crater Excursion – Northern Etna


The tour to the craters of 2002 is one of the most sought after destinations and chosen by tourists on the northern side of Etna, far from the large mass of visitors. Summit Etna North 3300mt: 4×4 and trekking


Departures planned from Piano Provenzana with off-road vehicles along the panoramic path that leads up to the north side of Mt. Etna, through ancient craters and recent lava flows up to 2825 mt. Then we start the ascent (470mt positive level difference) on foot on a path surrounded by volcanic bombs and scoria, till we will reach the Central Crater at a height of 3300 mt, where we will stop to admire the greatness,the uniqueness and the processes of this extraordinary volcanic environment, combined with the spectacle of the panorama that can be enjoyed from the roof of Sicily (the visibility might change according to weather or volcanic conditions). The descent goes back along the same path, while the last part will be made inside little channels constituted by soft and friable volcanic scoria, on which you can walk easily without any problem adopting the necessary precautions, till a height of 2825 mt where we will get the off road vehicles for the trip back down to Piano Provenzana.


Volcanological excursion of the wild and less touristy side of the Etna volcano

Etna North: Guided trekking to Summit volcano craters


Starting from Piano Provenzana 1800masl (Etna Nord), the unique slope that currently allows the climb to the summit in safe conditions, with special 4×4 we will arrive to 2825masl (Piano delle Concazze.) From here begins the ascent of about 2h to the main crater rim at an altitude of 3.320masl. You will walk on the edge of the Central Crater, Northeast Crater and we will admire the famous Southeast Crater, author of the most recent and impressive eruptions. You will surrounded by a unique volcanic environment, with gas emissions, volcanic bombs, and the sparkling colors of the ground due to the sublimation of various elements, including sulfur in particular. After the visit at the top, the panoramic path of descent characterized by fine volcanic ash and scorie, will give us a unforgettable view of Sicily coast During the hike the guide will explain the history, the formation and the peculiarities of the volcano. Once again at 2825masl, with the 4×4 we will return to Piano Provenzana

From a naturalistic point of view, it is the most exciting tour as we will cross the small and typical municipalities of the area such as Calatabiano, Castiglione di Sicilia and Linguaglossa to reach Piano Provenzana. The excursion starts from Etna Nord – tourist station of Piano Provenzana qt. 1,800 meters and continues along the scenic road that, between ancient craters and recent lava flows, will allow us to reach qt. First to the ruins of the hotel "Le Betulle", the only structure visible among those destroyed by the lava flow of 2002. Next stage an easy trek to the characteristic button craters of the eruption of 27 October 2002. From qt. 2,050 mt. about it will be possible to see the lava flow that destroyed Piano Provenzana. Return to the vehicles, stop at qt. 2.380 mt. to the large extinct craters "Umberto and Margherita" for a short trek. Next step arrival by 4×4 bus to the Volcanological Observatory, from here short trek to the top of the promontory of Pizzi Deneri qt. 3,000 meters. where, in absolute safety, we will be dominated by the Summit Craters. From the volcanological observatory you will wait for sunset and then return to Piano Provenzana.

WE WILL TAKE YOU OUT OF THE TOURIST ROUTES !! Surrounded by a landscape, sometimes lunar, we will try to know and explore Etna, a World Heritage Site, famous for its beauty and uniqueness. We will cross: – Deserts of Black Sand- Woods- Ancient and Recent Lava Flows- Old craters – Lava Tubes -to admire the fascinating VALLE DEL BOVE!! -Difficulty: Medium-Easy; -Itinerary length: about 5.5 km; -Maximum altitude:about 2100 m; -Trekking duration: about 3-3.5hours; -Difference in altitude: about 350m. The route in case of adverse weather conditions or real safety risks can be changed!! Other things to keep in mind:The duration of the experience is indicative. Unpredictable situations could cause the experience to end later than expected. It is always better not to make the day of the experience coincide with the date of your flight, if the scheduled time is too close to your departure / arrival.
